Now this, if anything, is a real head scratcher. Elizabeth Banks (SCRUBS, ROLE MODELS, W.) is now in final talks to play Tinkerbell in Disney’s live-action romcom TINK. Even as I’m typing, I’m still not sure I believe the words I’m seeing. Seriously, my scalp is red.
The film, dreamed up by Banks and Max Handelman from production company Brownstone Productions, the actress’ own production company, is said to play on the characters mischievous qualities, which truthfully do lend themselves to a comedy. I’m just not sure if they lend as much to a romantic comedy.
Co-starring will be choreographer Adam Shankman (HAIRSPRAY, STUCK ON YOU) and Jennifer Gibgot (17 AGAIN, STEP UP 3-D). McG is currently attached to produce.
I’ll be honest, and judge me if you will, but I don’t really want to see this unless they’re going for the hard R. Tinkerbell is already pretty hot. So is Elizabeth Banks. I’m just sayin’.
I understand that Disney is still riding the wave of their last successful live-action movie, ENCHANTED, but I don’t see this project having as much charm or whit that the last did. What’s the motivation here? Tinkerbell’s main demographic is 4-9 year-old girls, so why of all places, would you put her in a romantic comedy? ENCHANTED found it’s niche in parodying the silly, whimsical nature of the fairytale (girl meets boy, boy loves girl, girl gets captured, boy saves girl, girl loves boy) and the musical (random dancing and singing in the streets) and flipping it on it’s head. I’m not sure audiences will be able to watch Elizabeth Banks in a Tinkerbell costume and see Tinkerbell. More likely, they’ll just see Elizabeth Banks in a Tinkerbell costume, which again, would be great for a hard R.
Thoughts?
