Nerds! Assemble! The first look at THE GREEN LANTERN we’ve all been waiting for is here! Today, on the cover of Entertainment Weekly, sits Ryan Reynolds (or a CGI copy of Ryan Reynolds, anyway) clad in green. Originally Mel Gibson was to be on the cover, but thanks to his latest “tantrum” we’re all getting an early look at what we’ve been waiting for. Thanks Mel!

According to Reynolds, Hal draws his power from “will and imagination”. “We need a circus of Timothy Learys to think of things Hal would invent with his ring.” Hopefully, later pictures and eventually, footage, live up to that description. Check out the photo below, courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.

Yep…that’s green alright.

Personally, I prefer my Green Lanterns African American, but I suppose that’s more of an opinion on the actor, than a critique of the costume. Truthfully, I’m a little let down. What was wrong with the traditional costume. I’d like to think this isn’t my nerd snobbery getting in the way, but what was wrong with the traditional Green Lantern costume.  Good ol’ green and black, as far as I’m concerned, is the way to go here. Yeah, it looks kind of cool, but I’m still not sure if I’m sold on, as good friend Sean Hunter says “CGI Ryan Reynolds fighting a GOONIES-esque Peter Sarsgaard in space”. I’ll explain.

The villain in THE GREEN LANTERN is a character called Hector Hamond, an incredibly intelligent, evil mastermind. In one version of the comics, the character’s head is large and deformed, due to his outrageous intelligence, and in the other, he looks like a regular guy, just really smart. So imagine for a moment if you will, the above image fighting this guy…in space.

Of course, this is our first look at the green-garmented crime-fighter, so I could be wrong, which is most likely the case.

Thoughts?
