Somehow, this was the first I have heard of the Zach Galifianakis, Robert Downey Jr. project, DUE DATE. After watching the trailer, I am whole heartedly ashamed. The trailer, which is rip-roaringly funny, appeared yesterday on Yahoo Movies to an enormously positive response.

People can’t seem to get enough of these two lately. RDJ had a resurgence of popularity after IRON MAN that has yet to fade. Starting as a stand-up comedian, Galifianakis made his way up the popularity rung by giving many performances that earned him the title “Oh that guy! I love that guy!” and finally had his fate sealed by THE HANGOVER. Now, they’re joining forces, lucky for us too.

DUE DATE tells the tale of Peter Highman (Downey Jr) who in a moment of desperation, is forced to hitch a ride with blooming thespian and all-round weirdo, Ethan Tremblay, in order to see his first child’s birth. As well as the two leading men, the film stars Jamie Foxx, Alan Arkin, Juliette Lewis, Michelle Monaghan and RZA. What are you still reading for? Go! Watch!

The immediate upside to a trailer this good is that, should the movie live up, people can finally stop saying “it’s funnier than THE HANGOVER”.
Helming this hilarity is none other than Todd Phillips, Academy Award nominated writer (BORAT) and director of comedy jewels such as THE HANGOVER, OLD SCHOOL, and ROAD TRIP. Okay, maybe that last one isn’t so much a jewel, but there’s no denying Phillips’ eye for comedy. The writers are where the twist comes in. Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland (minds behind KING OF THE HILL) and Adam Sztykiel (MADE OF HONOR) as well as director Todd Phillips made a group effort in writing. I could see this coming from Phillips, but I’m not so sure about the Alan’s and Sztykiel is a curve ball for sure. Cohen also has written for AMERICAN DAD.
At any rate, the trailer is hopefully a sign of better things to come. They set the bar pretty high? Can they match it?
