I can be a sucker for a good heart-warming film. However, like good science, the formula has to be very precise. The film must contain equal parts bearded comic-relief, lovable yet troubled man boy, quirky love interest, and finally the film must have some kind of artsy cartoon scene. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a film that hits all of these precise measurements in the correct doses, so naturally I’m a bit weary of IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY. The film stars Zach Galifianakis (the beard), Keir GIlchrist (the boy), and Emma Roberts (the Zooey). They even put in a few artsy shots! Check out the trailer and prepare to crave some indie rock…
IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY was written and directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (HALF NELSON) and is an adaptation of the book by the same name. I can’t say there is anything particularly wrong with the trailer other then the paint-by-numbers indie flick vibe radiating off of it. I am a fan of the genre but it’s becoming more of a guilty pleasure than a full on appreciation. Call it the spice of life (cinema). These days however, it’s starting to feel more like the annoying coconut shavings, left only to be appreciated on rare occasions.
Get your helping of coconut shavings when IT’S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY hits theaters in September.
